As a gesture of solidarity to the iconic veterans of the British Army, a Ceylon tea-tasting session was organised by the Sri Lanka High Commission in London at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on 30 November 2023. Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Manorie Mallikaratchy and the Officials of the High Commission participated at this event and were taken on a tour around the historic Royal Hospital premises.
At the request of the High Commission, a tea-tasting session was conducted by Mr Suranga Perera, a professional tea taster and tea master at the UK Tea Academy. He explained the history of Ceylon Tea which was introduced by the Scottish Planter James Taylor, the unique flavors, aroma, and textures of Ceylon Tea from the seven regions of Sri Lanka namely, Nuwara Eliya, Uda Pussallawa, Dimbula, Uva, Kandy, Sabaragamuwa and Ruhuna. The veterans also enjoyed a freshly brewed cuppa tea of their liking along with some Sri Lankan snacks together with the High Commission officials.
The Royal Hospital Chelsea established in 1692, is a retirement home and nursing home for some 300 veterans of the British Army. The event is emblematic of Sri Lanka’s commitment to the longstanding bilateral relations with the UK.
